What is coaching?
The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as an ongoing partnership that helps clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life.

The coach and client relationship is a confidential, focused partnership to achieve a more abundant and fulfilling life. Coaching is similar to mentoring but takes place between two equals and includes but is not centered on role modeling. Coaching is not therapy or counseling which looks to the past for healing and discovery. The coached client desires to decipher the present and prepare for the future with a plan to achieve personal and professional improvement and success with one who is trained specifically to aid them.

Why is coaching becoming
more popular?

Coaching is currently the fastest growing area in the helps profession. The popularity of coaching comes from clients who see wonderful improvements in their life from the coaching process. Word of mouth is the best advertising! Coaches have easier ways to accomplish things. They have training, skills, tools, ideas and connections to help their client's ideas and dreams become reality. The key concept of personal coaching is the individual attention that the coach gives the client and a client-centered partnership that reaps significant, tangible rewards.

Why does coaching work so
well for the client?

There is what is called the “magic of coaching”. Focus, feedback, awareness, action and accountability make coaching a successful endeavor. Benefits reverberate throughout all aspects of a client’s life.

Who hires a coach?
People hire a coach when they are starting a new phase of life, want better relationships, are making a career transition, re-evaluating their life choices, feel out of balance, stuck or simply because they feel ready for a personal or professional breakthrough. Together the partnership may focus on long or short-term goals or work to get through a particularly difficult life situation.

What happens in a coaching session?
In each meeting, the client chooses the focus of conversation, while the coach listens and contributes questions and direction, while aiding a client to formulate steps to reach desired goals. This interaction creates clarity and moves the client into action. Coaching is client driven and centered. Coaching accelerates the clients' progress by providing greater focus, revealing blind spots and creating awareness of choice.

What about people who are already doing great in their lives? Why would they want a coach?
A coach can help a person in this situation tap and maximize other more obscure areas of their life, or come up with goals for a lasting legacy. Many highly successful people hire a coach with the aim of investing to gain the extra edge that they need to attain success in a competitive world.

Is a coach just for a short-term
or special project?

Sometimes. Many clients hire a coach to help them accomplish specific goals or projects. Continuing to work with a coach is not unusual for these clients because new goals and projects come up because of their successes.

How does one prepare for the
first coaching session?

A coaching session involves verbalized introspection with a coach who functions as a partner, challenger, confidant and personal champion. After a client understands the nature of the coaching relationship, they should come to the first session with a specific idea of what they wish to talk about and have an idea of what they hope to achieve in the end. They should be emotionally prepared to be open to the coaching process, able and willing to take action in their lives, and able speak candidly about themselves. The client should be willing to undercover both personal strengths and weakness, be open to new perspectives, observations, suggestions, and be able to accept encouragement.

The client will also need to be able to answer inquiries about their life and thought process, accept challenges and verbalize their introspection. They may want to keep a notepad and pen nearby as well to note insights or plans.

"Your insightful questions really made me stop and think about the issues at hand. They also helped me to admit and be more honest in the process. The coaching summaries throughout our time together gave me encouragement to keep pressing forward. It also gave me a concrete way of seeing my goals being reached. Your reminders of all that I have gone through and not to be hard on myself were very helpful. Your caring approach made me feel safe in the process, so I felt I could trust you."
